Westmont College wins NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship

Westmont College is a National Champion in basketball. The Warriors defeated Lee, Tenn 71-65 to win the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship in Franfort, Kentucky.

Tugce Canitez scored 25 points and grabbed 20 rebounds while teammate Kelsie Sampson also scored 25 points to lead the Warriors to victory. Esther Lee made 4-of-5 three-pointers to finish with 12 points.

Lee was named to the All-Tournament team while Canitez was selected as the National Tournament MVP and the NAIA National Player of the Year. The Warriors Kirsten Moore was named the NAIA Coach of the Year.

Westmont finishes the year 30-4 and National Champions. It is the first basketball title for either men’s or women’s basketball as Westmont. The 2003 women’s soccer team captured the last title for the Warriors back in 2003 until now.
