Cal State to get prop 30 funds

Talk about pay raises at Cal State campuses used to spark controversy.

But the proposal in Governor Jerry Brown’s budget is not intended for university presidents.

Some of them received raises during years of belt tightening and tuition hike protests.

The raises are intended for employees only and would amount to 1.2 percent. That would take up about $38 million of the $125 million 23 Cal State campuses will share during the next school year.

Employees and students at Cal State University Channel Islands in Camarillo said they like the idea.

Lori Cordova, a grant worker, said she hasn’t received a cost-of-living increase in the seven years she has worked on the Camarillo campus.

The extra education funding comes from the voter-approved Proposition 30 sales and income tax hikes.

Brown was scheduled to attend the Board of Trustees meeting in Long Beach Tuesday.

The proposal would also set aside funds to hire new instructors and increase enrollment by at least 6,000 students. Brown also wants $10 million to increase online courses that will help students graduate faster.

Trustees will meet again Wednesday.
