Gauchos walk past San Jose State in baseball

Greg Mahle’s bases loaded walk in the ninth inning gave UCSB a 5-4 win over San Jose State in the opener of a three-game series in Santa Barbara.

UCSB jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings but San Jose State scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Gauchos tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Brandon Trinkwon that plated Woody Woodward who had tripled.

UCSB ace pitcher Austin Pettibone got a no decision after working eight innings, allowing 8 hits and four runs but only one was earned. Mahle not only had the game-winning rbi but he pitched one inning of relief to record the win. The Gauchos are now 5-4. Same two teams play Saturday at 2 p.m. and again on Sunday at 1 p.m.
