Gonzalez Too Much For Dos Pueblos As Dons Win On Road

Emilio Gonzalez scored 19 of his game-high 28 points in the first half as Santa Barbara built up a big lead and just held on for a win at Dos Pueblos in boys basketball. The Dons led 37-22 at the half but Erik Olson’s three-pointer with 1:05 left in the game cut Santa Barbara’s lead to 53-50. But Gonzalez scored a bucket inside with under :40 seconds to go and Santa Barbara hit six consecutive free throws and won 61-53. The result left both teams 4-3 and in a second place tie in the Channel League. Already playing without 6’5 Zach Shugart, the Chargers also lost leading-scorer Cruz Mertens with an ankle injury in the third quarter.
