US Coast Guard Change Of Command
Captain James Jenkins, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach, presided over a change of command ceremony Friday at U.S. Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor.Captain Jenkins congratulated Lt. William T. Mcghee for his accomplishments. During Mcghee’s command, the Channel Islands Station helped save 130 lives, arrested six suspected drug smugglers and seized 17-thousand pounds of marijuana from Mexican panga boats and a cabin cruiser.Lt. Mcghee said he didn’t know what a panga was when he arrived at his assignment.Stopping them from landing became part of his mission.Lt Mcghee, a trained Aviation Survival Technician, got emotional as he presented flowers to his wife and thanked his children and his crewHis ordered promotion will send him to Alameda County to join District 11’s Enforcement Division.Mcghee joked that he will miss the perks like his parking space, but said it’s the people he will miss most.Lt. Chris J. Miller, a Boatswain Mate, left a Maritime Homeland Security post in Virginia to assume command. Lt. Miller grew up around small boats and comes from a Coast Guard family.Although the Channel Islands Harbor Station is considered a small boat station, it’s location next to Naval Base Ventura County makes it important to security.
