SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A plan to remove small apartments and build a new hotel in the Santa Barbara waterfront area has been appealed to the Santa Barbara City Council after it was rejected by planners.
The hearing this afternoon involves a site on 302 and 308 Montecito St.
Owner Ed St. George wants to build a 3-story hotel and coffee shop where four apartments currently are.
The Santa Barbara City Planning Commission said it was favoring housing and did not feel comfortable with the loss of apartments.
St. George said the hotel is a better fit near food establishments and a self serve car wash.
Santa Barbara City Council members inspected the site Monday.
Story poles identifying the height of the building and the simulated size have been up for weeks at the location.
