SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Golden 1 Credit Union announced a surprise giveback on Tuesday as a 'thank you' gift to its eligible members.

Golden 1 said the giveback totaled $20 million and was deposited across nearly 1.1 million accounts.

The giveback distribution was revealed Tuesday morning when Golden 1 encouraged members to check their savings accounts.

Golden 1 said all eligible members received a supplemental dividend of at least 25 percent of their total dividends received through Oct. 1 this year.

“Golden 1 Credit Union has been a member-focused organization since day one, and we have an unwavering commitment to invest in those who invest in us,” said Golden 1 President and Chief Executive Officer Donna Bland. “Our members are key to our success, and we are excited to say ‘thank you’ in a very real and tangible way. We thrive today because of their continued loyalty.”

Before Tuesday's announcement, Golden 1 highlighted three members for their inspiring stories.

Manuel, Sonia, and married couple Sam and Sara were nominated by employees at their local branches and were gifted additional personalized ‘thank you’ gifts from the credit union.

This isn't the first time Golden 1 has given back. In 2014, the credit union deposited $18 million across eligible accounts.

Since then, Golden 1 said they have grown to 1 million members and more than $12 billion in assets.

Golden 1 said they have awarded $2.7 million in college scholarship funds, provided $3.2 million in grants to local nonprofits that support foster youth and literacy, and donated more than $350,000 to food banks that feed families and individuals in need.
