Relay for Life returns to Santa Maria to support those impacted by cancer

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - After last year's drive-thru alternative due to COVID-19, Relay for Life made a welcome return to Santa Maria on Saturday.

The Relay for Life branch in Santa Maria has a long-time relationship with the Santa Maria Raceway.

Cancer survivors, fighters and those who have been impacted by the disease attended the event at Stadium 805 on Hutton Road.

After the walk, everyone touched by cancer is honored with a Luminaria.

"Each light represents a life—a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a support for a person still fighting the disease. It's a powerful demonstration that gives people the opportunity to grieve but also offers comfort and hope."

According to the American Cancer Society, this is the world's largest peer-to-peer fundraising event directed toward saving lives battling cancer.

The event ran from 4 p.m to 9 p.m.
