Friendship Center in Montecito hosts drive-in luau for seniors

MONTECITO, Calif. - The Friendship Center in Montecito hosted a drive-in luau Thursday afternoon. It allowed seniors to have fun in the sun.

Cars were spaced six feet apart as staff members led the group in physically distanced exercises, dances and games.

The Friendship Center is an adult day center. It offers engaging activities for dependent seniors, many of whom have been diagnosed with dementia or another cognitive or physical impairment.

"With this population, so much can change in a matter of months, weeks or even days. So everyone that comes, even if they confirmed, it's still a surprise when they get here, and we're so happy and we're all a little teary-eyed when they show up and leave," Friendship Center Program Manager Kathryn Charkas said.

The Friendship Center hopes to continue hosting physically distanced events.
