SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Barbara International Film Festival isn’t letting physical distancing stop aspiring filmmakers.

The SBIFF is hosting an online student film showcase to give a chance for student filmmakers to showcase their work.

"This is something that we had been thinking about for weeks,” SBIFF education coordinator Claire Waterhouse said. “We understand that this is the end of the year, this is an important time for the students, they've been working on projects."

Even though the students won’t have a live audience watching their work, the community will be able to enjoy their films.

"I think that's one of the highlights of being a film maker is getting to share your work with others,” Waterhouse said.

Along with many others things, movie theaters are temporarily closed and this contest will allow the community to enjoy local cinematography.

"Normally watching film is something that's done together,” Waterhouse said. “We wanted to invite the Santa Barbara community to get involve and we're going to showcase all the films, so it's really a celebration of their work."

The high school and college submissions will be grouped separately, and each group will have a Jury Prize and an Audience Winner.

A panel of industry professionals will select the Jury Prize.

On the other hand, the local community will vote on the Audience Winner.

"There's so much passion and talent from these students,” Waterhouse said. “To be able to see other students work, I think it will get them excited."

The student films will be available to view on SBIFF's website beginning on June 8, and the SBIFF community will have the opportunity to vote for the Audience Winner for each division through noon on June 22.

"We're just so excited to see the films and to celebrate the work of the students,” Waterhouse concluded.

The application is currently open on SBIFF's website and the submission deadline is June 2nd.
