Candlelight vigil held for fallen San Luis Obispo Police detective one year after death

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The San Luis Obispo community is remembering the life of San Luis Obispo Police detective Luca Benedetti who was killed in the line of duty one year ago on Tuesday.

“He stood for serving our community with honor and integrity," said San Luis Obispo Police Chief, Rick Scott.

Benedetti was shot and killed on May 10, 2021 while serving a search warrant at an apartment in San Luis Obispo.

“It’s important to me that we never forget Luca and it’s important to me that we carry his legacy on and I think tonight really communicates to our community the value that he had and the impact that he had not only on our department family but for our community as a whole," said Chief Scott.

Community members and emergency response agencies in the area are taking the day to honor Benedetti's life and sacrifice.

"It was on this day last year that our community lost Detective Luca Benedetti to senseless violence. He was a great man, father, husband and friend," the Pismo Beach Police Department said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The city of Grover Beach last night issued a proclamation declaring the week of May 15 through May 21 "National Police Week in Honor of San Luis Obispo Detective Luca Benedetti."

"We are really feeling the support of our community. We are really feeling the support for the Benedetti family as we again walk through this time together," said Chief Scott.

A candlelight vigil was held in memory of Benedetti at Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo Tuesday night at 8:15 p.m.

“A loss of a police officer anywhere effects us everywhere," said Scott.
