Wildfire season on the Central Coast: How can homeowners prepare?

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. – Summer is right around the corner, but it also means preparing for wildfire season in Santa Barbara County.

With the recent Loma and Ballard Fire in the County, here are some tips on how homeowners can prepare for this season.

"You can create a defensible space around your house and that gives us access to get our equipment and be able to turn around and be able to defend your home," said Santa Maria Battalion Chief Jim Clayton.

The Santa Maria Fire Department said that removing all flammable itmes from near your home is one of many recommendations.

"Maybe you have some wood, some firewood stacked on or next to your house. You want to remove all that," explained Clayton.

Along with preparing your home, go-bags should also be ready.

"That includes some clothing for you and maybe some blankets, first aid kits, flashlights, some important documents you have," said Clayton.

Insurance agents said getting covered for wildfires is also a must.

"When you go seek a policy for coverage, then we establish the reconstruction costs based on the square footage," said AllState insurance agent Laura Mohajer.

Agents said if your home isn't properly covered, you could lose your home.

"And it is a very sad situation, find out what your insurance needs are based on your locations," advised Mohajer.

Firefighters said you should take action now before it's too late.

"I would refer to your local fire agency, they can come out and help you and assess your property."
