SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Claire Sheehy is a volunteer at the Santa Barbara county Foodbank who does a little bit of everything.

"Today I am a driver, some days I’m a packer and some days I’m a bag fluffer. It all depends what the need might be."

As COVID-19 continues, the Santa Barbara County Foodbank is seeing a shortage of Emergency Response Delivery Drivers in Santa Maria and Lompoc.

To combat this, the organization is seeking delivery drivers in both areas.

"It’s really important because we have made almost 10,000 home deliveries countywide to seniors to get more and more calls, and we continue to get more and more calls for seniors in need of food assistance and in need of having that food delivered every day," said Laurel Alcantar with the Santa Barbara County Foodbank.

The Foodbank is currently in need of 10 drivers in Lompoc and 20 in Santa Maria.

Sheehy, along with several other drivers, made more than 600 deliveries Thursday morning.

"Our food distribution with every program we have has doubled. So we’re seeing an incredible need in the community right now," said Alcantar.

"You know it’s that simple act of kindness that if we move forward through this we’re going to see more and more of it taking place to help one another and to just be there for other people in general," said Sheehy.

All site volunteers deliver the bags at the client’s door while maintaining physical distancing.
