ISLA VISTA, Calif. - The Isla Vista Community Services District responded to a violent incident that occurred in the community just one day before the seventh anniversary of the 2014 Isla Vista tragedy.

The fight happened near the 6600 block of Sueño Road between late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

The community services district referenced a video that has been circulating on social media showing at least one person being assaulted on the ground while another person fired about nine gunshots straight up into the air in the background.

“Our Isla Vista community denounces violence and the reckless use of guns," said IVCSD Vice President Catherine Flaherty. "This unfortunate incident is especially poignant, occurring just days before the anniversary of the May 23, 2014, Isla Vista Tragedy."

The anniversary of the tragedy is this Sunday, May 23. During that day seven years ago, a struggling college student named Elliot Roger ambushed his three roommates, killing them in a stabbing attack. He then went on a driving and shooting spree through the streets of IV. A total of six students were killed and 14 injured.

Roger ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and his car crashed on Del Playa Drive.

Now, the resilient community spends time honoring those who were lost during the violent act including Christopher Ross Michaels-Martinez, Weihan "David" Wang, Veronika Weiss, Katie Cooper, Cheng Yuan "James" Hong and George Chen.

In reference to Saturday morning's incident, IVCSD Director Ethan Bertrand shared, “This dangerous situation was chaotic and traumatic for all who were nearby. If you were near this incident and are in need of assistance, please reach out for help from a local service provider, including: UCSB Counseling & Psychological Services, SBCC Student Health & Wellness Services, or the Community Wellness team."
