Central Coast homeless advocates support Gov. Gavin Newsom’s affordable housing legislation

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. – Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill Thursday aimed at combating homelessness with affordable housing and boosting California's economic recovery.

The governor said this money is projected to end family homelessness within five years.

“This bill is about the investment in the future in the state of California," Newsom said. "This bill is about our comeback. This bill is about our renewal. This bill is about our tenacity.”

Central Coast nonprofit People's Self-Help Housing says this is a huge step in the right direction.

“12 billion going to this effort, which is really historic, big and bold," said People’s Self-Help Housing CEO Ken Trigueiro. "We have a really good shot I think of creating paths even more so for sheltering and transitioning folks into eventually more permanent housing.”

The nonprofit said more than 160,000 residents are homeless in California, with thousands of those living on the Central and South Coast.

Homeless advocates said they hope this new 12-billion-dollar program will have similar results to last year's Project Home Key.

“Our hope is this will be similar because it is not an amount of money. It is about getting the money on the ground and doing what is designed to do," Trigueiro said.
