SANTA MARIA, Calif. - A minor who was recently admitted to the Santa Maria Juvenile Hall has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Chief Probation Officer Tanja Heitman announced the positive case at the Santa Maria Juvenile Hall on Wednesday.

The minor was tested during the intake process, according to the probation department.

All kids and teens who are sent to the juvenile hall are placed in an intake unit for 14 days as part of the probation department's COVID-19 management plan.

Officials said the minor has no symptoms or fever at this time but has been transferred to a separate medical housing unit as a precaution.

The Probation Department is focused on and responsive to the mental and physical well-being of youth in this challenging and stressful situation, and are taking steps to ensure their wellness. The Department is continuing to make decisions based on best practices in health and safety standards for the youth under their care, their officers, and the community.
