SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Vehicle traffic on State Street will stop for Memorial Day Weekend. Late Thursday night, the City of Santa Barbara decided to make State Street from Sola Street to Haley Street pedestrian only.

Cross streets will remain open to vehicle traffic.

Memorial Day Weekend will also be the first weekend where restaurants will be allowed to sit customers since the governor's stay at home order on March 19.

The weekend closure to cars and trucks will allow people to be more physically distance while enjoying State Street.

City officials said this weekend will be a test run to see if they should extend the vehicle closure for weeks or months after Memorial Day Weekend.

The closures will start at 4 p.m. Friday.
