Nearly half of all inmates at Lompoc prison now confirmed to have COVID-19
LOMPOC, Calif. - Nearly half of all inmates at the minimum-security prison in Lompoc have COVID-19.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, there are 541 active cases of COVID-19 at the Federal Correctional Institute, Lompoc. These latest totals come after the prison announced its decision to test 100 percent of all inmates at the prison.
There are 1,162 inmates at FCI Lompoc according to the Bureau of Prisons website. In addition to the inmate totals, 14 employees at the prison have tested positive for COVID-19.
The medium-security prison at the Lompoc Federal Correctional Complex, USP Lompoc, currently has 33 active cases of of the coronavirus among the prison population. Two of their inmates have died while being treated for the disease. 14 employees at USP Lompoc have also tested positive.
No decision has been made yet to test all of the inmates at USP Lompoc.
A hospital care unit which will service COVID-19 patients at USP Lompoc was just completed this week.
These latest numbers differ from the official tally released by Santa Barbara County Public Health. The public health department releases daily numbers using a noon cutoff time. Bureau of Prisons has a later cutoff time for case totals.
