Santa Barbara County seeing critical blood shortage

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Santa Barbara County’s blood supply is running critically low according to Vitalant, a nonprofit organization that collects blood and blood product donations from volunteers.

Mona Kleman is a donor recruitment manager at Vitalant. She said there has been a big drop-off in donations since May. And with more people being outside and active this summer compared to last summer, Kleman expects more blood donations are needed.

Kleman also said Vitalant saw a drop in donations during the pandemic. Vitalant didn’t send their mobile donation clinic to schools and offices like they normally do.
