All sports allowed again in Santa Maria city parks

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Starting Monday the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department will allow recreational and competitive outdoor high-contact sports in city parks.

City managers say this is great news for those anxious to get back to their favorite sports games.

For the first time in more than a year, all City fields Are now available for reservations.

"I’m really excited to open back up and get those youth and adults back out playing in those team settings and just have a good time," said manager Dennis Smitherman with the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department.

Smitherman says thousands of kids and adults are getting ready to get back on the field.

"We’re really excited to see their energy back in the park," said Smitherman.

Outdoor basketball hoops are also back in place across City parks.

Organizations interested in reserving City fields must submit a copy of their liability insurance and a COVID-19 plan to the Recreation and Parks Department.

"I am excited for baseball because I like it," said player Russell Simkin of Little League.

Santa Barbara County and local public health guidelines will be enforced, and reservation fees will be charged.
