Community reacts after SLO County police officer killed in shooting

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - For the City of San Luis Obispo, the shooting that killed Detective Luca Benedetti, and injured Detective Steve Orozco has hit home in more ways than one.

Joan Watson who has lived here for more than half her life is trying to process the tragic incident, "It was just unbelievable that it would happen here."

County agencies like Cal Fire SLO paid a visit to the police department.

"It’s always a tragic thing when this happens and it affects all of us in the community in the public safety," said spokesman Adan Orozco at Cal Fire SLO.

Orozco said he has worked alongside Benedetti on occasion.

While speaking with him outside the police department, he explained how there is a strong sense of brotherhood and sisterhood within the fire agencies.

"And that carries on to our law enforcement brothers and sisters as well, so when one of the other departments has an incident happen like this, we all feel that effect you know," said Orozco.

Inside the lobby of the police department, there are hundreds of flowers delivered from people all over the region.

People have also sent gifts, cards and even a Purple Heart.

"It’s very upsetting. I can’t really say anything more. I’m a little emotional right now," said Watson.

"We are with the San Luis Obispo Police Department, and we’re here to support them anyway anyway we can, and just know that we are your neighbors we are your family and we’re here to standby with you," said Orozco.

As the investigation continues, the lobby of the police department will remain closed to the public at this time.
