Drive-thru food distribution serves over 400 in less than an hour
CARPINTERIA, Calif. - Over 400 loads of food have been distributed in a unique drive-thru set up at Carpinteria High.
The Wednesday afternoon outreach has been taking place weekly since the coronavirus crisis began.
This effort was coordinated by the Food Bank of Santa Barbara County, the Carpinteria Children's Project, the United Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara County - Carpinteria Club, and the newly formed 93013 fund.
Those in line had to give some simple basic information about their household needs and they were handed bulging bags of food.
Six Carpinteria area growers made contributions from their fields to the overall supply, including a variety of lettuce and cilantro.
Along with produce and a bag of oranges, there were canned goods and other food items for several meals.
Rosie Perez said she was very grateful on her first visit to this type of distribution. "Everything is helpful. I lost my job. I am in the food industry. We don't know when we are going to be back. "
Like many who are trying to make ends meet she said, "I've never done this before."
The lineup of cars was in a formation to move them through in a dual-distribution plan with many volunteers doing the check in and handouts.
All workers wore protective gear.
The next distribution will be in a week at the same location.
