Amphibian Makes Trip From Oregon To Goleta

GOLETA, Calif. - A small aquatic amphibian made a long trip from Salem, Oregon and ended up on the Central Coast.

A biologist at the Natural History Museum identified the newt as a rough-skin newt native to Oregon.

He hitched a ride on a Christmas tree delivery truck and ended up at La Sumida Nursery. He was put in a box taken to the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network and will soon be taken right back to the exact tree farm where he came from.

"Every animal is important. The genetic diversity of course, you want to keep every individual in the population that you can. Especially this is something that people did, we took him out, so it's our responsibility to put him back," Elaine Ibarra, Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network.

The newt is doing well. His big trip home will take place just after the new year.
