Why are you running for office?: I'm running for a second term on the Board because I want to continue taking an active role in our local educational system's ongoing improvement. Education is the very heart of who I am and what I value most. I consider serving on the School Board as both a privilege and a huge responsibility. I work hard collaboratively to amplify the voice of underserved and underrepresented students. Our District faces the critical and vital task of re-opening our schools amid a Pandemic; COVID 19 heightened the illumination of racial and socioeconomic disparities, inequities in education, health, and childcare. Experience and understanding of the district operations are assets to resume safely in-person educational instruction.
What makes you qualified for the job?: I have work 20 years working with at First 5, and the last four years on the Board, I bring skills in collaborative leadership, fiscal accountability, parent engagement, and compassionate, decisive leadership
What are your two main priorities if you win?: Working with community partners, health and state officials to ensure our schools open and remain open in a safe and healthy manner. Strong parental engagement, and strong alignment with early learning with K-12 system
How will you interact with other governments?: The Board has a joint meeting annually with the City of Santa Barbara. Through COVID, we have interacted with the local, county, and state officials to ensure a safe and healthy return to in-person learning.
What are your plans to help overcome COVID-19?: The Board is updated regularly by the superintendent on plans to return to in-person learning through a slow and steady approach to the ultimate GOLD plan to reach a safe and healthy return to full in person learning. COVID 19 has heightened disparities, inequities in education, health, and childcare. It is challenging and critical; my experience and commitment will be essential in navigating these crucial issues with our students, teachers, parents, and the community. I plan to continue supporting an equitable and accessible curriculum, programs, and policies while ensuring that we are effective with our fiscal resources to address every student's unique needs.
Which two issues are most important to you?: I will work tirelessly to ensure and believe that the education of our children and strong parent engagement plays a critical role in their lives and the health of our community. Regardless of ability, background, or circumstances, all our children deserve the best education possible to help them reach their fullest potential in life.
