Why are you running for office?: I am running for office because I love Pismo Beach. I raised my family here. I want to protect the quality of life for current residents, our children and grandchildren. I am proud of the accomplishments of the past term: the construction of a new Pier and Plaza; the improvements of the Shell Beach Streetscape; the opening of the Pismo Preserve; and the maintenance of responsible fiscal policies that continue to support public safety departments second to none.
What makes you qualified for the job?: I grew up here on the Central Coast and graduated from Arroyo Grande High School. I attended Harvard University and USC Law School before returning home to Pismo Beach. I have served our Community continuously for the past 25 years as a Lucia Mar Unified School District Trustee, Pismo Beach Commissioner, California Coastal Commissioner and, for the past 8 years, a Pismo Beach City Councilmember. I am engaged with our residents and work hard to improve our City.
What are your two main priorities if you win?: My first priority is the protection of our water supply through the completion of the regional water project, Central Coast Blue. I also believe we need to take concrete steps to improve traffic and parking throughout the City through the use of technology, best practices, and the construction of a downtown parking structure.
How will you interact with other governments?: In recent years the City of Pismo Beach's interactions with our neighboring cities have gone from tense to warm and collaborative. I am proud to have been part of that change. We accomplish more when we work together. I have strong relationships with both of our California State Legislators and my service on the California Coastal Commissioner has helped to make certain that Pismo Beach's voice is heard.
What are your plans to help overcome COVID-19?: The City of Pismo Beach was not only the first municipality in San Luis Obispo County to enact a mask ordinance, we were also the first City to allow outdoor dining. We engaged particularly with the hospitality industry to take the precautions necessary to ensure the safety of guests, residents, and employees. These measures need to continue.
Which two issues are most important to you?: Local government's first and foremost duty to its citizens is public safety. I support sound fiscal policies that will allow us to continue to provide the fire and police services necessary to keep our community safe. I also believe the City of Pismo Beach needs to maintain clear and responsible land use policies that allow us to maintain our quality of life.
